Streamer Sundays Weekly Discussion

Posted: 24 Mar 2018 05:11 PM PDT

Do you enjoy watching streamers? Do you wish there was an easier way to find new up-and-coming streamers beyond the well-known, established Twitch goliaths?

Do you have a stream yourself? Are you looking to get exposure but not sure how given how Twitch displays streams and how one-shot stream promotion posts on Reddit tend to get ignored? Is anyone still reading these questions?

This thread is for you!

If you are a streamer or know of a cool, lesser-known (read: doesn't regularly pull in 1K+ viewers) streamer feel free to post the URL and a short, informative pitch about why you feel others would be interested to watch it. Why should someone watch your suggested stream rather than one of the hundreds of other streams out there?

The next great streamer might be just one comment away.

Enjoy!

Since a lot of people seem to be somehow confused by this: if you complete 3 quests in a day, you get 3 packs.

I've struck gold with this wild combo deck: The "Yes." Paladin

Posted: 24 Mar 2018 11:42 AM PDT

Introduction

Alright, so I know you guys have heard this a million times and are skeptical. But I really think this one might be the one. I've tried a few variants over the past hour and I think I've perfected the recipe. It's kind of meme-y but aren't most/all fun decks meme-y?

Play-style

It's a simple deck with one 6-mana combo piece. The game is always over by turn 6 if you draw it. And no, it's not Mysterious Challenger, though the deck plays a bit similar to secret Paladin.

I know that people dislike single-card combos which decide the game on its own. I understand your point and it makes sense if that drives you away from this. But you should try it a couple of times before you kick the idea.

Decklist

I've had a ton of fun over the last 20 minutes playing this version of the deck and I wanted to share it with you guys. I call it the "Yes." Paladin after what I said out loud when I came up with the idea:

FAQ

  1. What is the mulligan strategy? Aggresively mulligan for Skulking Geist. It's integral to your combo and most of the other cards are unimportant.

  2. Why not put two Skulking Geists to improve the chance of drawing the combo? Good question. I tried 2 of them. But if you only draw and play one by turn 6, it isn't as satisfying when the other one is still in the deck.

  3. What are the matchups like? In the past half hour, I've played against decks like Miracle Warrior and Hadronox Druid. So take my advice with a grain of salt: It doesn't matter what the match-ups are as long as two conditions are satisfied. (1) You don't die before turn 6 (or turn 5 with the coin). (2) You draw Skulking Geist before/on turn 6 (or turn 5 with coin). If you manage to pull those off, the game is basically over immediately.

  4. What are you, stupid? no ur stupid

TL;DR: Combo "Yes." Paladin makes for quick, fun and memorable games.

Edit: Proof that you can reach Rank 5 with the deck by /u/1nseL: https://imgur.com/a/poIl7. Pulled off the combo splendidly. I couldn't be more proud :')

Edit 2: Some of you were questioning if this deck could win. I don't even know why you were doubtful but here's /u/773_202_LUNA with a crushing victory after playing the combo: https://imgur.com/a/j07H2

Edit 3: "Yes." Paladin tearing it up in fucking legend. /u/xxDanTheMan knows how to mulligan like a pro: https://imgur.com/a/PlPuT

Meta Degeneracy and Bots at Legend

Posted: 24 Mar 2018 10:43 AM PDT

Below is a post I submitted on the official forums for hearthstone in an attempt to raise some awareness about the bot situation. The original post is here. I am cross posting here for additional visibility. If you want, you can comment on the original or here to help this issue getting exposure to the staff and community.

I'm primarily a Wild player. I've played since release and I love this game. I want to shed some light on these topics and reach out to the staff in an attempt to raise some awareness to the current state of the game. I care about the future and well-being of our game's community and am concerned about what I've seen.

Since the update to the ranked ladder system — and being on the cusp of the upcoming expansion — I have noticed there are a slew of new people reaching legend right now.

Ultimately, I view this as a good thing. It's a good feeling to reach a goal in any capacity. The changes made to the ladder system have made the grind to legend more attainable to the majority of the player base at that skill level. Because of this, more people are making the effort to get that card back and push into legend.

What I'm concerned about is how people are doing that.

If you look at the data for HSReplay — which tracks the meta through a third party decktracker application — you can see which decks have the highest win rate and the most games played.

These are the top 3 results for the Wild meta right now at the time of this post:

  • Aggro Paladin - 68.3% WR - 42,000 Games Played
  • Secret Mage - 65.2% WR - 21,000 Games Played
  • Giants Warlock - 63.2% WR - 20,000 Games Played

The reason I bring this up is because these decks all share common traits. The most obvious is this:

They're degenerate.

All three of these decks have high power level, low skill ceiling, and are virtually non-interactive. These decks are so well optimized, you don't need to make any real decisions, you can just play the cards in your hand and win. Coincidentally, they are also extremely polarized. You could basically call them rock, paper, and scissors. Paladin being rock, Warlock is paper and Mage is scissors. One countering or canceling each other out.

Another thing to note about these decks is that they are all perfect candidates to be ran by a bot program.

I am fairly involved in the hearthstone community, I try to absorb as much information from as many sources as I can to become a better player.

Yesterday I came across a post on the hearthstone community for Reddit about a botter that reached rank 8 in Legend in Wild using a bot program. The post contained screenshots and conversations to support the validity of this. The link for this is here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/86pxgo/bot_program_hit_8_in_wild/

Concerned about this, I did a google search on bot programs and found that one of them listed at the top actually advertised how many users of their program have hit legend with it — it's in the hundreds for both Wild and Standard this month alone.

They also conveniently listed when the last ban wave was to further promote their product: January 14th, 2016.

It has been over two years since the last time there has been a ban wave on bots. The examples above are just for one program, I don't know how many others are out there.

I, like many other players have been trying to grind gold for the upcoming expansion. I have run into tons of bots in the past couple weeks in the early hours of the morning doing the same. It breaks my heart to see what the player experience has become.

I almost have a full collection, 96% of the cards and I can only play a fraction of them because this meta is so oppressive. I'm actually looking at going back to Standard when rotation hits because Wild has become a place that no longer promotes diversity and fun or wacky decks. I honestly feel like I have more interaction sitting in chat on someone's stream on Twitch than I do actually playing the game.

I'm not a developer or game designer. I am not going to try to tell Team 5 how to do their job. I know that they pour their hearts into this game and have invested countless hours so we can all enjoy it.

I want us all to have a positive experience when playing Hearthstone. I'm asking that we can have an open discussion in hopes to alleviate and address the issues stated above.

This doesn't just impact Wild ranked, this is the same in casual and these decks mentioned have their Standard counterparts that function just the same.

Perhaps we need to look at changing how some cards work, or looking at game modes that promote diversity in deck building, maybe we can revisit quests. I want to know what your thoughts are on this and how we can come together to help Hearthstone be the best game it can be.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Forget about the card rotation, the thing I’m going to miss most this year is the Karazhan soundtrack

Posted: 24 Mar 2018 03:27 PM PDT

Karazhan is by far my favorite soundtrack in Hearthstone. Even though KaC and KotFT both have great music, I could listen to Ballroom Sling for hours. I hope Blizzard keeps making new soundtracks for each expansion (looking at you Un'goro) and that they are at least half as good as Karazhan's. Otherwise, I might have to switch to Wild.

List of Karazhan songs:

Top Cards of the Week from r/CustomHearthstone

Album

It's your boy, Coolboypai, here. The excitement for Witchwood is still going strong over at r/CustomHearthstone. There's still a lot of cards being made everyday that are inspired by the upcoming expansion; I wonder if any similar designs will turn up in the set. In addition, we're still holding our War for the Witchwood event where everyone is invited to join and help their team fight for control. It's a pretty simple process of just changing your flair on the subreddit and posting your own designs. It's just a fun, community event to celebrate us reaching 40,000 subscribers that you can find out more about here. Hope to see you all there.

Zola the Gorgon appreciation post

Posted: 24 Mar 2018 02:10 PM PDT

Just wanted to make an appreciation post for Zola the Gorgon. I pulled it and at first I was happy because it's a gold card generator but after I started teching it in a couple of my decks, I fell in love with the card. Zola is so versatile and can fit into literally any deck. Need another death rattle? Zola. Wanna re-roll a battlecry? Zola. Found a legendary that can be abused? Zola it and you're rocking two. In decks that I'm missing an important epic, I can Zola it and there, I have my second one now. I've found very few decks that Zola can't fit in.

Just wanted to share my appreciation for Zola. She is a fine specimen indeed.
