| Four years later, I finished Hearthstone Posted: 18 Mar 2018 10:45 PM PDT Well, /r/Hearthstone, I can't exactly celebrate this with my wife and kids but maybe you'll understand how I feel. I just got my 500th win with Mage this evening, bringing me to nine-out-of-nine golden classes (gallery). I've been playing the game regularly almost since it launched, so this felt like a major milestone. Is this what it's like, having the freedom to play whichever class you want?! I've been screenshotting key moments from the game over the years, and some of them are in the linked gallery. Hitting Legend and 12 wins in the Arena for the first time rank among some of my most rewarding-feeling accomplishments in games. Going head-to-head against some of my favorite Hearthstone streamers was incredibly cool, too. This game has created many fond memories for me. I've been playing Blizzard games forever. We're talking Rock n' Roll Racing era. I've literally played them all, but none have grabbed me quite like Hearthstone. Playing this game over the years has probably changed my entire outlook. The you-win-some-you-lose-some nature of it has become a lens through which I see the world. Something about the randomness of the game feels deeply true-to-life. I'm a game developer myself and grew up hoping to make games with a shred of the quality of Blizzard's. My own work over the years owes a lot to Blizzard's pioneering storytelling and craft. After finishing work on our second game back in May 2014, I lost myself in Hearthstone, and played it all through the three-year development of our third game... and here I am, still at it! Thanks to all of you for being a part of this community, and creating a place where someone like me can lose himself in this great game along with the rest of you. I've lurked here for years, reading, watching streams, listening to podcasts; I've rarely contributed anything other than just playing, but felt like a part of this community all the same. And, I'm deeply grateful to Team 5 for making such a breakthrough game at Blizzard, even when the pressure to make 'the next WoW' must have been overwhelming. From a fellow game developer and a longtime player, thank you for the wonderful work you've been doing over the years. [link] [comments] | ||

| Elemental Shaman needs the Dragon Priest Treatment Posted: 18 Mar 2018 09:39 AM PDT Ever since Blackrock, Blizzard has aggressively pushed for Dragon priest to work with powerful cards like Twilight Whelp, Wyrmrest Agent, Drakanoid operatives, and most recently, Duskbreaker and Twilight Acolyte. Almost all of these cards, the last 3 especially, are far above the mana curve. While Priest has a solid core set to back it up, it's these powerful cards that hold the archetype together. Now let's look at Elemental Shaman. Murmuring elemental compares unfavorably to Brann, Fire Plume Harbringer compares unfavorably to wild growth, Hot Spring Elemental is just an Earthen Ring with taunt slapped on, and most of the powerful elementals (Fire Elemental, Grumble, Blazecaller, Kalimos etc.) are 6 mana or higher where the game is already decided. The playable early game neutral drops like Fire Fly, Tar Creeper, and Fire Plume are all decent but nothing special. There's only one 2 drop elemental in standard (Volatile Elemental) and you can't consistently activate Tol'vir Stoneshaper without diluting your deck with garbage. What Elemental Shaman needs most of all right now are powerful early game elementals. Blizzard has been drip feeding Ele Shaman cards for a while now so they clearly want the deck to work so I can't understand the Dragon Priest bias while Shaman keeps getting the shaft. Sorry about the long rant, I just wanted to get my opinion out there as someone who's been trying to get Ele Shaman to work since Un'goro to very little success. Feel free to downvote if you disagree. tl;dr Ele Shaman will be bad until they get good cards. Obvious but true. [link] [comments] | ||

| How I avoid card spoilers, and why I think you should too Posted: 18 Mar 2018 12:13 PM PDT Back in KOFT I decided I wanted to avoid all card reveals, so that the very first time I saw the new cards would be when I'm first opening packs. It was an absolute blast! Opening Ultimate Infestation, Snowflipper Penguin, and some of the Death Knights for the first time was extremely fun and memorable. While we all get excited for new cards, once you've committed to avoiding spoilers its actually pretty easy to execute. I would even come to reddit and see some cards generating a lot of hype while not knowing what they did. Uther of the Ebon Blade, Gnomeferatu, and Defile all generated a lot of buzz, but I didn't see them until release day. I recommend giving this a try at least once. It makes pack opening a completely different and immersive experience, trying to pick up deckbuilding themes without seeing the whole picture, and being surprised by new and powerful cards all at once. I've posted about this before, but entering a new spoiler season seemed like a good time to bring it up again. See you in the Witchwood. [link] [comments] | ||
| Simple lore of all HS Legendaries (L+M) Posted: 18 Mar 2018 03:25 PM PDT Hello my fellow lore enthusiasts, welcome to the newest edition of simple lore for nerdbois and nerdgirls. Quick disclaimer: Lich King will come under T, as his card name is The Lich King Comment if you like these and feel free to point out any mistakes I have made! Leeroy Jenkins is based of a real player. I am sure everyone and their mother knows about the origin of the Leeriy videoby now. Lilian Voss. When Sylvanas Windrunner and the other undead managed to regain their free will, breaking ties with Lich King, they named themselves the Forsaken. Nowadays, Forsaken view being undead as eternal curse and most of them don't wanna spread the plague to other living beings. But being part of the Horde and in constant war conflicts with the Alliance, they need new manpower. So now when they raise new undeads, they ask them politely if they wanna serve, or remain dead. How kind. But when you(the player) raise Lilian and ask her the question, she proclaims that she cannot under any cirmumstances remain undead and runs off instead. Later you learn she is the daughter of High Priest of the Scarlet Crusade (organisation of priests and paladins bend on purging every undead), and such thing just would not fly with her daddy. When her dad's forces capture her and try to execute her, she changes her mind and now has two goals. Eradicate every scarlet crusade member AND eradicate every Necromancer. She's kinda swinging both ways. And I know what you might be asking. Is Lilian Voss a copy of Magic the Gathering's Liliana Vess? And the answer is. Yes. But not intentionally. It's natural that WoW developers are huge nerds and play MtG, so atleast one of them in charge of naming random NPCs thought about Liliana Vess and just kinda used the name thinking nobody would care. Loatheb is a bog beast (Fen Creeper) Kel'Thuzad infused with the undead plague virus, just for kicks. Lord Jaraxxus is the EREDAR LORD OF THE BURNING LEGION. As one of the challenges of Argent tournament, Wilfred Fizzlebang is supposed to summon a Fearsome Doomguard, but fucks up and brings forth an Eredar lord. Jaraxxus of course OTKs Wilfred and now the players have to deal with him. Jaraxxus is completly irrelevant lorewise, BUT the impact he had on the playerbase was massive. We all loved his over the top voice lines, and then the remix came... oh yeah Lorewalker Cho is the head of the Lorewalker organisation, the historians of Pandaria. Every story told in Pandaria needs to have a moral and merit. That's just it how it goes. And every history, event or biography ever passed down in Pandaria was told in a story, or a poem. Cho translates those age of stories to the impatient members of Horde and Alliance, because he believes the present can learn from the past. Lynessa Sunsorrow. Blood Elves are the part of Elves that refused to stop using magic after the explosion of Well of Eternity (see Illidan's episode pls), and are to this day very much addicted to any power source they can get. For centuries, they used their small version of the Well, the Sunwell, created by diluting some lake with the magic water from the original Well. Prince Arthas fucked the well tho, when he used it's waters to resurect Kel'Thuzad and blood elves were hungry once again. Kael'Thas, the elven prince sent them a corrupted being of pure light, the N'aru, and the blood elves used it for a while to gain their fix of magic. The N'aru eventually overloaded and they decided to not torment it anymore, and Prophet Velen helped them cleanse the Sunwell with the N'aru's heart. Anyway, Lynessa Sunsorrow wasn't ok with blood elves pussying out from draining the N'aru and left the city to find her own alternative source of magics. She settled for the catacombs and she lives off of the residue magic dripping from the catacombs walls. Lyra the Sunshard is pretty much unique to HS. Peter Whalen said she is 'Basicly on the level of Elemental Lords', without any explanation, so I don't really think it's accurate, but if it is, that would put her on the same level as Ragnaros, Al'Akir the Windlord, and Neptulon. Madam Goya was operating a black market hidden in the Tavern in the Mists on the slopes of Pandaria peaks. When the ancient mists protecting Pandaria form the outter world vanished and the Horde and Alliance made first contact with Pandarens, Madam Goya saw immediate economic opportunity. Ever since then she was moving her illegal bussines everywhere the Horde and Alliance moved to. Looks like she ended up in Gadgetzan when she accepted the position of Museum currator, but shes just using the Museum as a warehouse for her illegal good, and to house the Jade Lotus clan. For a price, ofc. Maexxna is giant spider matriarch Kel'Thuzad's henchmen captured in the mountains of Northrend for his Naxxramas project. She's probably Hadronox's mom. Majordomo Executus. Majordomo is the title Ragnaros gives to his right hand men. Baron Geddon used to be Ragy's Majordomo, but he pussied out in one battle and that opened the position to Executus. Executus would organise Ragnaros's temporal house on the mortal plane(under the Blackrock Mountain, where he got unwillingly summoned by Emperor Thaurisan), and can schedule you a meeting with Ragnaros if you ask him nicely. Oh yeah, but this one time he disturbed Raggy too soon and Rag just obliterated him. The next Majordomo was Fandral Staghelm. Mal'Ganis was a dreadlord tasked with overseeing Kel'Thuzad in his mission to plague the human kingdoms with undead scourge. After Prince Arthas kills Kel'Thuzad, he sets his mind of Mal'Ganis. They finally clash in the city of Stratholme, where Arthas and Mal'Ganis race to kill/zombify all the residents. When the whole city is razed, Mal'Ganis mocks Arthas or killing his own kind and tells him to meet him in Northred. This was all part of a master plan to lead the prince to Mal'Ganis's master, the Lich King. Lich King was of course two steps ahead of the plan and planned for Arthas to dispose of the dreadlord after. Mal'Ganis felt pretty betrayed and swore to avenge himself. He tried to like once, but then the storywritters forgot about him and his story ends unfinished. Malfurion the Pestilent. For the oficial story, read this comic. Malkorok hails from the Blackrock orc clan led by Rend Blackhand. They refused to join Thrall's horde (go back to Grommash story) and would rather share their living space with Dark Iron dwarf's, Nefarian's dragons and Ragnaros under the Blackrock Mountain. It gets crowded over there. Malkorok renounced his allegiances to the lame blackrock horde and joins Garrosh's Horde instead. His brutal strenght and hot temper quickly made him Garrosh's top man and he later tasked him with leading the elite millitary force of Kor'Kron. After Garrosh's actions escalates into a Horde civil war and Garrosh becames overwhelmed by the power of recently unearthed Heart of Y'sharrj, Malkorok is there to defend the city under siege from the Alliance. But he dies in the process. Hey what did you expect, he's a raid boss.. Malorne is a Wild God, who fell in the first demon invasion defending the planet. Was later ressurected when Night Elves needed himto defend the sacred Mt. Hyjal from Ragnaros. And he's the daddy of Cenarius. Malygos is one of the five dragon aspects. He leads the Blue Dragonflight, he's the ESSENCE OF MAGIC. He bares the betrayal of Deathwing (Deathwing told the other aspect he would craft a weapon, Dragon Soul to stop the first demon invasion, but instead he used the weapon against his fellow dragons, because N'Zoth told him to) very gravely, as Deathwing wiped nearly all of Malygoses brothers and sons. He used to reside in the icy cold Northrend being slowly driven to madness upon the loss of his flight. He was also pretty mad at the Night Elves for fucking around with magic and eventually summoning the demon invasion, so he decided to strip all the mortals of magic by redirecting all magic ley lines(think of it as cables) to his home. This created huge instabilites and manifested in powerful arcane elementals, like Anomalus. When his wife Sindragosa was raised as undead by the Lich King, Malygos lost the last bit of his dignity and launched a war against every magic user in the world. Alexstrasza, being the aspect of life was most sympathetic towards mortals and lended her helping hand(wing) in defeating her old friend. Marin the Fox is an adventurer, similar to player characters. Master Oakheart hired him to retrieve the legendary weapon Woecleaver from the catacombs. He didn't offer him any gold for it but said Woecleaver is stashed in room full of gold and other treasure. And Marin just went for it. Deffinitelly read the short story Blizzard wrote about him if you are more interested. Master Oakheart. Back and forth on these two. Oakheart is a Guild master of a guild simply named... The Guild. He recruits people for adventures and dungeon runs. Most recently he asked Marin the Fox to retrieve Woecleaver for him. Mayor Noggenfogger. First thing first, his first name is also Marin. Anyways. Noggenfogger started out as a mere quest giver with very little lore attached to him, but once again player experience and stories made him into a lore character. He used to be an alchemist stationed in Gadgetzan and offered quest to collect various ingredients around the world for his potions. When finished, you could buy the Noggenfogger potion. This drink would randomly make you smaller, lighter or turn you into a cool skeleton. Because of the skeleton transformation the potion became very popular among the playerbase. During the 4.0 revamp of the old world, Blizzard made Noggenfogger a mayor and removed the quest, instead made the potions available right away. The 'lore' behind this was the potions made Marin so filthy rich he just bought the attention of everyone else and became the most powerful goblin in town. Medivh, the Guardian is gonna be the awfully long one of this episode. He was the Guardian, the most powerful mage in the land whose job is to protect the human kingdoms against all evils, but most importantly demons. His task wasn't to be easy as he was born with dark secret. When his mother was fighting the demon overlord Sargeras and defeated him, part of his essence seeded in her unborn son, Medivh. That kinda fucked this kid over and years later it was him who opened the way for orcs to come and invade the human planet. When Khadgar had his unpaid intership job at Karazhan tower, he discovered the dark secret Medivh had and eventually defeated him. Medivh is now in a limbo state where he sorta exists and sorta doesn't. The corrupted Medivh is for sure dead, but the normal one is like a ghost or a memory, it's complicated. Anyway. As he had the Harry Potter/Voldemort kinda deal with the demon overlord Sargeras, he knew about the upcoming second demon invasion. So he contacted the horde leader Thrall and the Alliance leader, Prince Arthas's father King Menethil and urged them to sail the sea to the uncharted continent of Kalimdor. Thrall was a pussy so he followed, but Menethil was a badass who doesn't take shit from noone and refused. Medivh later contacted Jaina, and she eventually listened. His plan was to get the Orcs, Humans and Night Elves(represented by Malfurion and Tyrande) together to fight the demon lord Archimonde. Mekgineer Thermaplugg. His story is very closely intertwined with Gelbin Mekketorque, but if you don't wanna scroll back to the G+I episode I will repeat myself here. Gnomes elect their leader by the merit, or in other words, how much shit each other invents. Despite Thermapluggs's genious, Gelbin was always a few gears ahead and when he became the High Tinker of Gnomeregan, Thermaplugg remained his second in charge. Over the years envy has filled Thermaplugg's tinkering mind and when troggs ambushed the gnomish city, Thermaplugg offered Gelbin a devilish plan to spray the trogg tunnels with radioactive waste. Not enclosing the important fact that this could backfire horribly. And it did as 80% of all gnomes perished right away and the rest now roams the nuclear city ruins as lepers, with Thermaplugg in charge. Gelbin is working on rebuilding the gnomish pride with the rest of survivors and has also issued a death sentence against Thermaplugg. In the G+I episode I promised to tell you how this sentence carried out, so here it goes. The adventurers kill him. Millhouse Manastorm is a powerful mage with a really short temper. He is always in search of greater power and that kind of greed got him locked up in Arcatraz, the N'aru prison for the most powerful enemies. Upon being released, he constantly switches between the good guys and bad guys, depending who's offering greater promise of power. Last time we saw him he was working with Khadgar, but he ran away, so maybe he's working once again for the bad guys now. You never know with this fuzzy ball of angryness. Mimiron's Head. Mimiron is one of the 5 keepers of Ulduar, who watch over Yogg'Saron's prison. He's extra crazy into engineering. He created the first prototype of gnomes, the Flame Leviathan and his master creation the V-07-TR-0N. Mimiron's head is the top part of the machine. It's also a sought after mount that drops from the hardest version of Yogg fight. Mogor the Ogre was the only ogre to ever lead an orc clan, the treacherous and untrustworhty Laughing Skull clan. He was also given a SECOND HEAD by Gul'Dan, so his already big intelect could double. The Laughing Skull were desert orcs, living in isolation away from other clans and didn't take very fondly when all the clans banded together under the banner of Horde to invade the human planet Azeroth. So they were always causing trouble, helping out enemies, foiling Horde's plans and later helping to close the portals Ner'zhul and Gul'Dan opened to other worlds. Despite the magic and leading capabilites Mogor had, his only passion was brawling. After the portals were closed, the orcs stranded on Azeroth and the Laughing Skull deserted him, he rejoined his fellow ogres and now runs the Ring of Blood, where he eventually meets his demise, as he's one of the contenders there. Moorabi. When Lich King's campaign to purge all living things off of Northrend reached the ice troll kingdom Gun'Drak, the desperate trolls began to sacrifice their Wild Gods to gain their strenght against the undead. Moorabi sacrificed the mammoth Wild God conviniently named Mam'toth. Moroes was the Medivh, the Guardian's loyal servant, who even tho got killed by Medivh when his demon corruption overcame him, still serves the Karazhan tower in (un)death. I'd argue he was the most important raid boss of all time, as he was for many players the first one they ever fought. Such a iconic battle. Mukla, Tyrant of the Vale. The power of Old Gods brought up the worst in Mukla and now WON'T SHARE HIS BANANAS. [link] [comments] | ||
