70% Win Rate Control Lock Guide (Rank 3 - Legend) (Paladin buster)

Posted: 24 Mar 2018 11:11 PM PDT

So, I just hit legend today with my deck experiments and decided to do this short guide for anyone who likes playing control decks. Since it's too much to speak, I'll throw any thoughts I remember.

Decklist: https://imgur.com/a/wzBnv

Sample size is 32 wins and 14 losses, but I've actually played a LOT with control warlock in tons of previous versions (even Oakheart), but I got stuck at rank 3. I only reached Legend when I decided to stop being stubborn and crafted the Weapon and one Lackey (for the amount of demons in the deck, 2 copies often felt unnecessary)

I've encountered mostly Paladins (murloc or dudes), Warlocks (mostly cube), Priests (spiteful, big or inner fire) and Jade Druids, and sometimes mages (control or tempo)

PALADINS

This deck absolutely WRECKS aggro paladins (unless you get super unlucky with mulligan).

Mulligan: Defile, Mistress of Mixtures, Drain Soul, Despicable Dreadlord, Hellfire, (keep Gul'Dan or Stonehill if you already have some of the other cards in hand)

Manage his threats: Knife Juggler, Murloc Warleader, dude excess, Murloc Tidecaller, Steward of Darkshire...

Versus Paladins you must have board dominance. You can make setups for bigger board clears on the next turns if his board seems weak (just watch out for Tarim)

Playing Dirty Rat at the start of game is tricky, sometimes you pull a problem on board, but it usually isn't an issue if you have a board clear

Use your clears wisely, play around silences (they usually run 2), protect your Dreadlord (his 1 damage is SUPER useful)

PRIESTS

Mulligan: Gul'Dan, Skull of the Man'ari, Skulking Geist, Siphon Soul, Possessed Lackey, Hellfire

There are 3 priest decks on meta (Big, Spiteful and Inner Fire), so you can't really know what you're facing.

Don't play Mistress of Mixtures on turn 1, he might pull a Northshire Cleric and milk some card draw

Never play Dirty Rat on early turns unless you are sure he isn't Big Priest.

Try to put your Voidlords on board through Lackey or Weapon before turn 10 (or 9 if he has coin) and kill it asap to avoid Mind Controls (and get one back with Gul'Dan). Try to play the Skulking Geist (if he isn't Spiteful Priest) and some Dirty Rats to pull some key pieces to prevent him from stealing your Voidlord.

Manage your clears. His deck consists of using your deck against you (I used to run Rin, but it was played against me much more than the opposite). Sometimes his deck is only as strong as yours. Try to get some demons and then Gul'Dan asap, then control the board and pound face

Versus Spiteful: He only has 2 board clear cards (the 3/3 dragon).Don't flood the board too much, especially with 3 health minions.

Versus Big: Save Siphon Soul for Yseras or Y'Shaarj (too high health), try to maintain a board, but not too big, watch out for his clears. Playing Geist prevent bigger clears from him

Versus Inner Fire Combo: Never leave a minion with high health. Even if a trade doesn't kill an enemy, do it. Geist is max priority, but you must control the board first. Sometimes you'll want to leave your own minions at lower health (like Dirty Rat or Voidlord) because he might steal it and do the combo

WATCH OUT FOR FATIGUE! So don't tap too much and try to get value from your cards. Big Priests usually run Psychic Scream, so it isn't that big of an issue

DRUID

Mulligan: Skulking Geist, Skull of the Man'ari, Possessed Lackey, Gul'Dan

His early game isn't strong.

Watch out for bursts on the late game (double swipe+3 dmg. hero power on your face is 11 damage)

Skulking Geist is TOP priority. Keep tapping until you find him. Druids usually fatigue first. Play the Geist and castrate this bastard once and for all.

Save the silence for Aya Blackpaw.

WARLOCKS

Mulligan: Gul'Dan, Possessed Lackey, Skull of the Man'ari, Spellbreaker

Whoever gets Gul'Dan first has a huge advantage

Your game is slower than his. Manage the threats he puts on board (Doomguard and Giant) and keep tapping for Gul'Dan

NEVER leave a Doomguard alive

Always have in mind the burst he can deal to your face with Doomguards on late game if he pulls out Gul'Dan (and double Hellfire+hero power dealing 9 damage face)

The meta might be different for you (for example, I used to run one Gnomeferatu versus Kingsbane Rogue and Eater of Secrets vs tempo mage, but from rank 3 to 1 they didn't show up at all).

That's it. Hope you liked it. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask.
